Anger Management vs Individual Therapy: Which Do I Need?

Anger management is structured psychoeducational programming focused on recognizing anger triggers, learning regulation skills, and reducing harmful behavioral responses. Anger-focused therapy is individualized psychotherapy that addresses anger as a presenting concern alongside underlying issues — trauma, relationship patterns, depression, or substance use. Court-ordered defendants typically need anger management; clinical clients seeking deeper change typically benefit from anger-focused therapy. Arkansas Counseling and Wellness Services offers both at three Arkansas offices and via telehealth.

Best for

Court approved anger management is best when you have a court order, employer mandate, or probation requirement specifying anger management. The class produces statewide accepted completion documentation that satisfies most Arkansas court orders.

Individual therapy is best when you are seeking voluntary help with anger, want flexibility on format and pace, or want to explore underlying causes. Individual therapy is also the right path when anger is a symptom of trauma, depression, or substance use.

Common questions

Will individual therapy satisfy a court order for anger management?

Usually no. Court orders for anger management typically specify the structured class format. Bring your court paperwork to a phone call with our scheduling team to confirm what your specific order requires.

Can I take both?

Yes. Many participants complete the court approved class for legal compliance and continue with individual therapy for deeper work. Programs are independent and can run concurrently.

Is the class group based or individual?

Group based. The 8 hour class is delivered in two 4 hour sections to a cohort of participants. Individual one on one work happens in our individual therapy program.

How quickly can I get into either?

Anger management classes have published cohort schedules; call to confirm the next start date. Individual therapy intakes are typically scheduled within 1 to 2 weeks of calling.

Will my employer accept either?

Anger management produces completion documentation that most employers accept for workplace anger referrals. Individual therapy is voluntary and produces clinician documentation only with your written release.
